Sunny Isles Beach School
Residents and future residents of Sunny Isles now have one more thing to enjoy. In August of 2008,
the Sunny Isles Beach K-8 School opened. The brand new school is comprised of a four story facility
as well as a two story administration, cafeteria/auditorium and media center. To support the new school,
three levels of parking were also constructed. More than 1,600 students will attend the school in grade
levels from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
The new school opened in a convenient location directly across from Trump Royale
and Trump Palace. It is the first public school to be opened in Sunny Isles
and has certainly met with rave reviews. The first principal of Sunny Isles public school is Annette Weissman, formerly of
Ojus Elementary School. Principal Weissman has stated that it is her plan to ensure that the Sunny Isles Beach Community
School will receive an A rating from the state during their first year. The school will focus on a strong curriculum of
science, math and technology. In addition, the school will offer art and music, Spanish classes and a gifted program.
A number of after school opportunities will also be made available to the students as well through a cooperative agreement
to use the city’s community center as well as the baseball field and gymnasium.
The school is clearly setting high standards when it comes to educational quality. Classroom sizes are to be capped once
they reach 18 students in grades K thru third grade and 20 students in grade four through eighth, per legal mandates.
Residents who are interested in having their children attend the school will need to provide proof of address, the child’s
last report card and proof of immunizations.
The school’s pre-Kindergarten program is completely free and will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.
Children are welcome to stay until 2:30 pm for an additional fee. Initially, the school will open to serve students
through sixth grade, with seventh grade being added in the fall of 2008. One year later, in 2010, eighth grade will be
offered at the school.
The school is certainly a welcome addition to the residents of the local Sunny Isle area, where students have frequently
had to be transported to other schools in years past. Now, students have the ability to attend school right at home and
enjoy what will certainly be the beginning of a tradition in excellence.
