Fort Lauderdale: Venice of America

Fort Lauderdale is unique in that it has an intricate canal system, which has gained the city the nickname of "Venice of America." Fort Lauderdale is not only a popular tourist destination, but it is also home to some 42,000 yachts. It features over 100 marinas and boatyards. The area also has over 4,100 restaurants and 120 nightclubs.

The history of Fort Lauderdale is named after a fort that was built during the Second Seminole War. The city did not actually become established until fifty years later. There were actually three Fort Lauderdale forts that were built in the area. They derived their name from Major William Lauderdale, the commander of the soldiers in this area. The city of Fort Lauderdale was found adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and features seven miles of beaches.

The climate of Fort Lauderdale is truly tropical. The summers are hot and humid and winters are warm and dry. Although, there are cold fronts that come through from November to March. However, the average temperature for each month is around 74 degrees Fahrenheit. The majority of the year is warm and can be likened to the Caribbean tropics.

The economy of Fort Lauderdale is highly dependent on tourism. The city was a very popular spring break destination from the 40s to the 80s, but is heavily reliant on cruise ships and nautical recreation today. Instead of attracting the college crowd, the city attracts a more affluent tourist today.

In the past decade, a number of high-rise condominium developments have exploded, particularly around Las Olas Boulevard. The downtown area has also seen a number of other new improvements including boutiques, art galleries and restaurants.

There are several points of interest in Fort Lauderdale as well. It is home to the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop, which is the largest indoor and outdoor flea market. It is also the home of the world's largest drive-in movie theatre, featuring an amazing 13 screens. Additionally, the International Swimming Hall of Fame is located near Fort Lauderdale Beach. The Hugh Taylor Birch State Park features camping, picnic areas as well as canoeing.

If you're looking for a luxurious, beachfront condo, then you'll find excellent high-rise living in Fort Lauderdale such as L'Hermitage, The Palms, L'Ambiance. Plus, you'll be close to all that Miami and Palm Beach has to offer. In addition to amazing views of the Atlantic, you'll find excellent amenities from floor to ceiling glass doors and windows, granite countertops, built in cappuccino machines and even valet parking. Oceanfront living doesn't get much better than this.
